The TDS Dance Company

Celebrating the passion of dancers since 2007!

The Dance Studio has three competitive performing dance companies.  Our Junior Dance Company is comprised of elementary age dancers, Our Junior Elite Dance Company is comprised of middle school age dancers, and Senior Dance Company is comprised of Middle School and High School aged advanced dancers.

Each July we hold Dance Company Auditions for new students. Please email us at thedancestudio06@thedancestudiomedford.com for more information on how to audition for the junior, junior elite, or senior dance company teams.

The TDS Dance Company has performed all over New England and Beyond.  Some of our more exciting performance credits include the Boston Celtics, The Walt Disney World Resort, The Pulse on Tour Regional and National Events, Radix Boston Regional Convention and Competition, nuvo regional convention and competition, Filming for HGTV, a Marketing Music Video Campaign for an ad agency in Boston, Fanueil Hall Boston, The Esplanade in Boston for the Boston Aids Walk, and more!

Frequently Asked Questions about being a part of the TDS Dance Company:

Q: Do you have to try out every year for the TDS Dance Company?

A: Yes. This helps our judges best assess your most current technique level to properly place you on a team. This also helps build your skill set at performing at auditions which is so important in the performing arts industry.

Q: How much does it cost for TDS Dance Company rehearsals?

A: There is no cost for the weekly dance company rehearsals. The TDS dance co was built on the belief that we wanted it to be accessible to ALL dancers who had a strong passion for performing and dance. There are fees for competition, additional costumes needed, and travel expenses related to performance opportunities. We offer a number of fundraising opportunities for dancers to participate in to offset these costs.

Q: Do dancers have to sign up for specific classes at TDS to be a dancer on the TDS Dance Company?

A: Yes, we have a summer requirement for dancers and a Main season requirement for dancers who are on the TDS Dance Company.

Summer Requirement: In addition to the weekly dance co rehearsal, dancers must enroll in a one week summer camp OR a combination of 3 mini camps or 6-week summer class programs.

Main Season requirement: Dancers must take a minimum of two weekly recreational classes (Acro and faces do not count towards this requirement) in addition to their weekly dance company rehearsal. If one is not ballet they must attend a weekly spins and leaps class.  Ballet is however a requirement for senior dance company dancers.

The Dance company season starts in July and ends in May/June of the following calendar year.

Q: What is the weekly commitment once you’re a member of the TDS Dance Company?

A: Summer: Each team rehearses for one hour in the summer and there are a total of 6 summer rehearsals. Dancers are expected to attend at least 3-4 (we understand many dancers vacation and travel in the summer months).

Main Season: Senior Dance Co rehearses 2 hours per week; Junior Elite Dance Co rehearses 1.5 hours a week and Junior Dance Co rehearses 1 hour per week.  Dancers may have to attend additional rehearsals leading up to competition or performances throughout the season.

Q: How many performances does the TDS Dance Company have in a season?

A: Usually between 3-5 performances per season.

Q: Are their opportunities to fundraise the cost of travel, TDS dance company costumes, competition fees or other performance related costs?

A: Yes we offer group fundraising as well as individual fundraising opportunities to offset any additional costs associated with being on the TDS dance company.

Q: What styles of dance does the TDS Dance company typically perform?

A: Hip Hop, Modern/Lyrical, and Jazz, but we sometimes add in acro, tap or ballet sections to routines.

Q: Do dancers get cut at auditions?

A: Dancers are not guaranteed to make the TDS Dance company from auditions. If a dancer does not make the team they hope for or one of our three teams, our judges will give constructive feedback as to how they can improve for the next season and next audition.

Q: Does each company have a specific age you have to be to audition?

A: Dancers can audition once they are incoming 3rd graders/8 years old.  Ideally our Senior Dance Company is for advanced high school and middle school dancers, our Junior Elite dance company is for intermediate middle school dancers and high school dancers, and our junior dance company is ideal for elementary aged dancers.

Q: How does dance company differ from recreational classes at TDS?

A: Dance company offers additional opportunities to our dancers beyond one yearly recital to perform so they get more experience on stage! This is a stronger sense of “team” then in recreational classes since you are having more “off the dance floor” moments with your dance friends throughout a season between fundraising, additional performances, summer dance, and rehearsals.

Q: How are opportunities for solos and featured roles picked?

A: Dancers will be given the opportunity to audition for solos or featured roles throughout the season if applicable or be selected based on their coach’s previous assessment of dancing, work ethic, punctuality/attendance in class and rehearsals throughout their history of dancing at TDS.

Q: What are the rules for participating in other extracurricular activities alongside dance company?

A: Dancers are encouraged to participate in other extracurricular activities like sports, clubs, theater, etc.  The expectation will be that dancers will adjust their schedules as needed when signing up for other activities to be present at all dance company rehearsals and shows once they commit to being on the TDS dance co and to attending performances and events.  In the event that a dancer has to miss a rehearsal they will be expected to catch up via rehearsal videos posted to their BAND group before the next rehearsal.
